GLEWC offers acupunture. Acupuncture in the treatment of
disease involves the stimulation of specific points along affected
channels to reopen "blocked" energy flow and reestablish
normal functioning. Diagnostic acupuncture uses these same meridians
to detect an energy blockage. Precision in selecting the proper
points, inserting needles (if used) to the proper depth, and
maintaining treatment for the proper length of time, all are
critical for successful acupuncture.
Acupuncture can potentially be used for all problems in animals.
In horses, acupuncture is used most commonly for musculo-skeletal
conditions such as sore backs, lameness conditions and neck pain.
Other common reasons for using acupuncture in horses are neurological
conditions, respiratory problems (ie. heaves, bleeders), gastrointestinal
conditions (ie, colic, ulcers), reproductive disorders (ie, infertility
of the mare, lack of libido, failure to ejaculate in a stallion)
and other disorders. Many horse owners will use acupuncture as
a routine part of training to try and prevent sports injuries.
