Deworming
Protocol REVISED 2011
It is time for a change in the world of equine deworming!
Our days of randomly deworming every 2 to 3 months on a rotating
schedule need to stop. This plan of “fast rotational” deworming
was developed in the 1960’s, a time when it was common for horses
to die of colic from parasite infection. Some horses have poor
immunity to parasites and subsequently shed large numbers of
parasite eggs in their manure. In fact, 20-30% of the horses
in the world are responsible for 80% of the parasite eggs in
the environment. Learn how to determine your horse's shedding
category. Get the deworming chemical chart, Wisconsin's deworming
schedule, fecal test timing and sample collection information.
Accelerating
Onset of Breeding Season
There are several ways to accelerate the onset of breeding season. Get information
on two ways GLEWC suggests you can do it.
Pregnant Mare Protocol
Mares are more then capable of having their babies without our help;
therefore do not interfere unless there appears to be a problem. Get information
on pregnancy check recommendations, nutrition, vaccinations, deworming and caslick.
Know the indications of problems during pregnancy and problems during foaling.
Preparing
for Foaling
Find out all you need to know about preparing for foaling,
such as recommended shots, preparing the foaling area, what type
of changes the mare goes through and what you should have on hand
for the day.
Foaling:
Stages of Labor
There are three stages of labor.
Find out what you need to know.
Foaling Diary
It is very important to monitor
your mare during foaling but to allow her
to foal without your interference and in
the peace and quiet. Download this foaling
diary to keep track of your mare and foal's
progress.
Newborn Progession
There is a progression for newborn foals. Understand
the progression and know when to call your veterinarian.
Neonatal Foal Care
Mares
and foals need
time to bond.
Know when to interfere with to newboarn
after birth.
Get information
on umbilical
cord care and
prophylactic
use of enemas.
Understand
the importance
of urination
and newborn
foal evaluation
and IgG blood
test.
Orphan Foal Management
Feeding and raising orphaned foals can be an extreme
challenge particularly if the foal was orphaned at birth. Losing
a mare is never expected and being left with a motherless orphan
can turn into an unexpected nightmare. Intensive management
will optimize the foal's survival chances.
Compunded Drugs Under Scutiny
Recently Compounded Drugs
have gone under scrutiny – the
equine practitioner is potentially compromised
legally in using certain medications that have been
purpotrated to be generics. Using licensed medications,
the equine patient gets the best care and more favorable
results.
Equine First Aid Kit
In the event of illness or injury, the horse owner
should be prepared to care for their horse until the veterinarian arrives. We
suggest every horse owner have a first aid kit that should be readily available
including if you trailer away.
Recommended Vaccination Guidelines
A vaccination program depends on many variables (age,
infectious exposure risks, sex and pregnancy status) and should be tailored to
fit your horse with the help of your veterinarian. In addition, good management
plays a key role in ensuring the health, well-being, and performance of your
horse, for example, insect control (mosquitoes, ticks and flies) and avoidance
of any contagious disease by isolating new or sick horses.
